Great Basin National Park

Updated: Jun 17

6/15/24 - Despite the delays on 6/14, we were able to drop the rig at our RV park and get to Great Basin National Park (on the east side of Nevada) in time for the Lehman Cave tour I had booked. It was a large network of caves with beautiful formations.

Close to sunset, we returned to the park for an astronomy presentation. The park is an "international dark sky park", meaning low light pollution and great views of the night sky.

The skies were clear but the moon was very bright so even seeing the Milky Way was difficult. The highlight was seeing the Chinese Space Station cross overhead. We had a male mule deer saunter across the road in front of us on the way home.

6/16/24 - We drove up towards Wheeler Peak (13,063') and completed a 4.6 mile hike to stand on a glacier! We were over 11,000' at that point. The altitude had us huffing and puffing!

Standing on a glacier!

Along the way, we walked through a grove of Bristlecone Pine trees, which live more than 4000 years!

Pat is pointing to the LIVING bark on a Bristlecone Tree. We found it interesting that the greenery only grows where there is live bark. The rest of the tree is basically dead.
On our hike, we met this guy coming down. He hiked up TO the snow, then climbed UP the snow, to ski!!
And he repeated this numerous times, as you can see from his tracks.
Relaxing while watching the sunset

Ahhh Pat, what a life! Drink in one hand, cigar in the other.

P.S. Next time I run into a lone telephone booth, with a dial tone in a national park, I'm going to dial the operator, lol (that was a great photo).🐇

Great pictures! I liked the picture of the Briselcone pine tree that is very very old.

I wish I was a fly in your rig. 👀

Yes, we are really appreciative of the NPS protecting these amazing trees!
